Classifieds websites: It pays to be careful – better to invest your time than to lose your money!

22.05.2025 - Online shopping and specifically classifieds have become part of everyday life. But where there are real bargains, scammers are often not far away: fake listings are an everyday danger on these websites. But how can you spot them and protect yourself so that you can safely use classifieds websites? This year's S-U-P-E-R.ch national awareness campaign reminds us that our own carelessness is often the greatest danger. By paying attention and staying informed, you can greatly reduce the risk.

There is no guaranteed way to tell the difference between fake classified ads and genuine ones. Nevertheless, there are some simple tips for checking the authenticity of offers and ways to avoid becoming a victim of scammers yourself.

Be suspicious

It can feel like a treasure hunt sifting through all the ads on classifieds websites. Suddenly you come across what seems like a great find – it's cheap, no signs of wear, as good as new. This is where you should become suspicious, because if an offer seems too good to be true, it usually is. Don't make excuses and take the time to carefully check the authenticity of such ads.

Do not allow yourself to be put under pressure

Scammers know that popular and rare items are good bait. They pretend to be selling such items and claim that they have many other potential buyers – this is designed to get you to act quickly for fear of missing out. If you find yourself being rushed by a seller to buy their item quickly, it is a good idea to double check that everything is in order.

Look at their ratings

Most classified ad websites have some kind of system that allows sellers and buyers to rate each other. A user's ratings can give you an idea of whether they are trustworthy. However, be aware that ratings can be faked. If a user's profile has only been up for a short time, but already has a lot of positive ratings, it could be fake.

Insist on certain conditions

If possible, pay when you collect the item. If a seller tells you that he or she is on holiday or that bank transfers are not possible at the moment and that you need to choose another payment method, be suspicious. If, for whatever reason, a seller asks for a copy of your ID, do not give it to them. Your identity could be used to commit further fraud.

You don't need to give out your credit card details to receive money

Selling things on classifieds websites also comes with risks. If an alleged buyer claims that payment and transport are being handled by a third-party company, be extremely cautious. You will be contacted by a supposed payment service and asked to provide your credit card details in order to receive the money. Don't be fooled: you never need to give out your credit card details to receive money.

It may take a little more time to make sure that you are safe when using a classified ad website, but it is not an unnecessary effort. Protective measures are important – for you and your cybersecurity.
