Theft of access credentials and hacking of a social media account.
Social networks such as Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat are particularly attractive to cybercriminals because users tend to be very active and respond quickly. If a scammer gains access to your social media account, they can post content and view your data, run ads using your account, or spread false information about you and try to extort money. In many cases, hacked accounts are used to target your contacts directly. If you still have access to your account, you should change your password immediately.

Further Information
- If you still have access to your account, you should change your password immediately.
- If you can no longer access your account, try using the 'Reset password' function to set a new one.
- If you are unable to change your password, contact your provider. Many have a process for regaining control of your account.
- You can find a selection of links under 'Further information'. In our experience, this recovery process does not always work on the first attempt. In such cases, the NCSC recommends trying the process again.
- Let your contacts know, via a different communication channel, that your account has been hacked, and warn them that they may receive fraudulent messages sent in your name.
- If you no longer need the account and want it closed, the NCSC recommends asking your contacts to report your account as hacked to the relevant provider. The more times an account is reported as hacked, the more likely the provider is to take action and close it.
- If you have fallen victim to identity theft, the NCSC recommends filing a police report. You can find local police stations and their phone numbers on the Suisse ePolice website (available in German, French and Italian).
- Use a different, strong password for each online service.
- You should always enable two-factor authentication (2FA) for services that offer it. This will increase the security of your data considerably.
- Never share your security codes or passwords, even if you think you know the person asking for them.
- Your report via the online form helps the NCSC identify trends. This makes it possible for the NCSC to raise public awareness in a targeted way.
- Unfortunately, the NCSC cannot help you recover your social media account.
