When an item is sold on a classified ad platform, a fee has to be paid for transport or the alleged bank transfer, for example.
There are many different types of classified ad scams. Typically, scammers will insist that even though the transaction has been completed, you still need to transfer money to them or to a third party who will, for example, take care of delivery. In this type of scam, it is also common for scammers to email fake transfer confirmations that look like they are from a reputable bank. These fake confirmations give the impression that a transfer has taken place. If this happens to you, break off all contact with the scammers.
It is also not uncommon for scammers to threaten legal action if you cancel the sale or purchase. These are empty threats and should be ignored.
- Break off communication immediately and do not respond to any further messages.
- If you have made a payment, contact the bank you used immediately. They may be able to stop the payment.
- Inform the classifieds website about the incident. They can block scam ads, buyers and sellers.
- If you have suffered a financial loss, we recommend that you report it to the police. You can find your nearest police station on the Suisse ePolice website.
- Proceed with caution if a buyer makes demands. Insist on shipping and transaction fees being paid by the buyer.
- Have a look at the ratings on the classified ad site. Check sellers' ratings. But bear in mind that reviews can also be bogus.
